AHISTORIC SYMPOSIUM

AHISTORIC SYMPOSIUM is for the exhibition Ahistoric Occasion at MASS MoCA. The show is about different objects and ideas taken from the past, which is then reworked into something new. For example there is a series of portraits of people who dress as Abraham Lincoln in Civil War reenactments.

For the poster, which was just going to be photo–copied onto preprinted posters (that green stuff top and bottom), I decided first of all that history is determined mainly by documents and evidence that we have collected over time. I found a nice graphic which is used by forensic photographers to show scale in the evidence they record. At first I tried to create a piece of documented evidence about the symposium. I decided that it was maybe not eye-catching enough for a poster, and took the graphic elements I had used to create a new false history of images of an astronaut in the show by artist Yinka Shonibare.
