Peter Garfield: Diorama 3d Poster Sketch
---------------------------------------
I started doing a poster today for an artist named Peter Garfield. He has made a film, which I haven't seen yet, where it is said that the camera moves through walls and has a different sense of space. The images above are just sketches I have done of his name cut from 3 different patterned pieces of paper which have been lined up in a diorama sort of 3d effect. Just some first sketches...

Hipmotism
----------------------------------
Hipmotism is a jazz band from NYC, who will be playing at MASS MoCA. This is a first draft of the poster. Because of their name's likeness to hypnotism, I took each letter and saxophone, printed them out on a circle, and photographed them while I spun them.
Just a first draft, still working on it.

Slavic Soul Party!
--------------------------------------
The beginning ideas I had for this poster were Rem Koolhaas' EU barcode flag and then that op-art image within lines which I thought would fit in with the flag well. I picked colors from the Slavic flags and then made an op-art tuba for the stripes, but I was having a little trouble with type.
Well for whatever reason on the second and third posters I just dropped the slavic colors and then for some reason the type seemed to begin to work a little better. Still working on it...

Double Poster
------------------------------------
Just a test for a "double poster." I wanted to see if by folding I could combine two images into one poster, as if it were a two frame animation of sorts. When you walk by this poster, the elephant is always walking in the same direction as you are. I have know idea if this has already been done a thousand times before or not, but I just thought I would give it a go.

Ska Valentine's Day Posters
------------------------
Skank your heart out! Some Valentine's Day Teen Ska Dance Party posters were needed last minute. Tried to combine a V and a heart to make a pattern for the background, just b&w printed on colored paper. The plan was to hang them up together in a triptych.

AHISTORIC SYMPOSIUM
AHISTORIC SYMPOSIUM is for the exhibition Ahistoric Occasion at MASS MoCA. The show is about different objects and ideas taken from the past, which is then reworked into something new. For example there is a series of portraits of people who dress as Abraham Lincoln in Civil War reenactments.
For the poster, which was just going to be photo–copied onto preprinted posters (that green stuff top and bottom), I decided first of all that history is determined mainly by documents and evidence that we have collected over time. I found a nice graphic which is used by forensic photographers to show scale in the evidence they record. At first I tried to create a piece of documented evidence about the symposium. I decided that it was maybe not eye-catching enough for a poster, and took the graphic elements I had used to create a new false history of images of an astronaut in the show by artist Yinka Shonibare.
moulageboek
-------------------------------------------------------------------
hey corndogbrothers,
-------------------------------------------------------------------
these are new sketches for the 'moulageboek'. we
are trying to create a total image of how the book
will look like. there are two different parts in
the book. one part is about the history of draping
and about different designers. the second part is
instructions for how to learn the technique of
draping. we are trying to show the differences in
the design of the book too. the last spreads are
pages to show the atmosphere with large images.
these pages will be random through the book.

Cultural Agenda
Most cultural agendas are organized chronologically and by categories like movies, music, etc.. I tried to organize this agenda by price, as my friends and I didn't have much money at the time. The cheaper items' type is much larger and crass, and as the items become more expensive the type thins and becomes more refined. On each page, in a different color, I also decided to give people another cheaper option than what is available. As you go through the agenda, you see that the cheaper option I propose becomes increasingly dominant as the price of the page's activities rise.
